1. University of Cambridge

The top university in the UK is the well-known Cambridge University. Cambridge is the second oldest university in the English-speaking world and was founded in 1209. Affiliates of this university have won a whopping 118 Nobel Prizes. Founders and early professors of Harvard University, including John Harvard himself, attended Cambridge University. Cambridge university has over 100 academic departments and over 34% of the students are international. 2. University of Oxford

Making up the ‘ox’ part of Oxbridge (the ‘slang’ name for referencing the top 2 UK Universities), Oxford University is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, dating back as far as 1096! Although it is second on the list today, it is still regarded as one of the best universities in England, sometimes beating Cambridge to the number 1 slot. This top university has schooled 69 Nobel prize winners and 27 UK prime ministers. The university’s library system is the largest university library in the UK. 33% of all students at Oxford are international students and the majority of its UK undergraduates come from state schools, not private.

 

3. London School of Economics

In at number 3 is the London School of Economics and Political Science (aka. LSE). LSE was founded in 1894 with the vision to ‘know the causes of things’ and improve society. The intake of global students is intentional and currently standing at 68% of its students being from outside the UK.

 

4. Imperial College London

This university is known for its excellence in research and education in science, engineering, medicine and business. It was at one of the laboratories here that Sir Alexander Fleming accidentally discovered penicillin. 50% of the students at Imperial College London are non-UK students.

 

5. St Andrews University

Founded in 1413, St Andrews University is the oldest university in Scotland and the 3rd oldest in the English-speaking world. This university is where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge studied. This university is popular with international students also, with 46% of the students here being of non-UK origin.
