Chubb stops underwriting policies for the NRA
Gun ownership out of cover
Chubb, one of the largest publicly traded and casualty insurance companies in the USA, has given notice to the National Rifle Association (NRA) that it is to stop underwriting the NRA Carry Guard insurance policies.
The NRA Concealed Carry Insurance and Concealed and Carry Insurance policies provide personal arms liability insurance. It covers legal costs for self-defence shootings by gun owners who lawfully carry firearms.
This latest insurance news came to light following the mass shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, USA. Although they have not stated the reason, Chubb gave notice 3 months before this particular shooting.
Chubb joins a growing list of companies that are severing ties with the NRA in response to their opposing of stricter gun laws.
Having a big player in the insurance market making such a big decision, be it for business reasons, ethically or otherwise, will no doubt mark the start of a firearm philosophy change.
