7 Things to do in London this Summer for Students

Are you an international student studying in London who is hanging around for the summer? We think that this is a great idea! London offers some amazing things to do, and much of it is for free! Here are our top 7 things to do in London in the summer.

Make the most of your experience in the British Capital!

Try a bit of city swimming

This may be unexpected due to London’s weather reputation, but England’s capital city boasts many outdoor swimming pools and Lido’s (public swimming pools). Two of the most popular are Tooting Bec Lido (South London) and London Fields Lido (North London). Tooting Bec Lido is large and is surrounded with Victorian style, brightly coloured changing room doors. This lido was opened in 1906 and is the UK’s largest, fresh water swimming pool at just over 90m long. London Fields Lido is a heated Olympic length swimming pool, plus has a café and a large sundeck area for lounging.

 Double Decker Tour Bus

Even though you may feel more like a resident then a tourist, these busses should not be avoided for this reason! These tour buses take you to areas you may not have been before and give you a great lesson on different areas. It really is interesting what you can learn. Plus, now the weather is warmer, you can sit on the top deck and not be cold! Many of the busses offer tickets that allow you to hop on and off at any of the stops on their route, meaning you choose which areas you would like to spend time in.

 Visit an open-air cinema

Us brits love to make the most of the outdoors in the short time of summer that we have, so we have fully embraced outdoor event cinema! Each year there are more and more of these events popping up, and more and more creative ideas too! From watching a film by (or floating in) a swimming pool, up on a high-rise roof top or in a fully film themed space, there are many different options to choose from. They are often popular with tickets selling out early, so don’t leave it till the last minute!

 Notting Hill Carnival

It would not be the August bank holiday in London without the Notting Hill Carnival! On Sunday 26th and Monday 27th August, hit the streets of west London, where you will see all kinds of performers, including musicians and dancers, dressed up in stunning carnival costumes and parading through the streets. There will also be lots of street food vendors and stages and areas with DJs and musicians for a proper party! It gets busy and public transport is often affected, so do a little pre-planning of your day.

 Find a Beer garden

We may be short on our green spaces in the city, so pub gardens (or beer gardens) are always buzzing with revelers enjoying a drink in the sun. There are a number of great pub gardens in the city, some small, some large, but all perfect for relaxing with friends.

Or a roof top

Each year more and more buildings in London are converting their roof spaces in to the perfect summer hangout spots. You can enjoy anything from cool, urban lazy spaces to smart, flowery towering gardens, all with stunning views of the city.

 Attend a dance music festival

As you may have noticed, us Brits get a little excited when the sun is out, and we love our music, so it is only natural there are is a wealth of music festivals to keep us occupied. There is hardly a weekend in the summer where this is not a music festival in the capital. From underground techno, to DnB and mainstream house, the choices are varied, and the line-ups are huge. So, grab yourself a ticket, hop on a bus, or party with thousands of others in London this summer!
